Minimum-mass panels under probabilistic aeroelastic flutter constraints

چکیده
Aeroelastic flutter is a dangerous failure mode, and aircraft structural components are designed under a deterministic flutter margin. Meeting this safety factor may result in overly-conservative structures, however, an alternative approach incorporates uncertainties into the computational models, and imposes a maximum allowable flutter probability during the optimization process. This technique is demonstrated for the variable-thickness design of an elastic panel subjected to supersonic flow. A performance measure approach based on the first-order reliability method incorporates probabilistic flutter constraints during the search for a minimum-mass panel. Optimization results are given for uncertainties in the panel's boundary conditions, and for non-deterministic thickness design variables. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Level-Set Topology Optimization with Aeroelastic Constraints
Level-set topology optimization is used to design a wing considering skin buckling under static aeroelastic trim loading, as well as dynamic aeroelastic stability (flutter). The level-set function is defined over the entire 3D volume of a transport aircraft wing box. Therefore, the approach is not limited by any predefined structure and can explore novel configurations. The Sequential Linear Pr...
متن کاملOptimization of an Aeroservoelastic Wing with Distributed Multiple Control Surfaces
This paper considers the aeroelastic optimization of a subsonic transport wingbox under a variety of static and dynamic aeroelastic constraints. Three types of design variables are utilized: structural variables (skin thickness, stiffener details), the quasi-steady deflection scheduling of a series of control surfaces distributed along the trailing edge for maneuver load alleviation and trim at...
متن کاملEvaluation of 2-D Aeroelastic Models Based on Indicial Aerodynamic Theory and Vortex Lattice Method in Flutter and Gust Response Determination
Two 2-D aeroelastic models are presented here to determine instability boundary (flutter speed) and gust response of a typical section airfoil with degrees of freedom in pitch and plunge directions. To build these 2-D aeroelastic models, two different aerodynamic theories including Indicial Aerodynamic Theory and Vortex Lattice Method (VLM) have been employed. Also, a 3-D aeroelastic framework ...
متن کاملEffect of Control Constraints on Active Stabilization of Flutter
The effect of amplitude and rate control constraints in active flutter suppression is analysed for a number of different state feedback control laws considering mathematical model of two degree-of freedom nonlinear aeroelastic airfoil system with trailing and leading edge flaps. The size of region of attraction is used as an additional metric to select a set of acceptable control laws designed ...
متن کاملDirect flutter and limit cycle computations of highly flexible wings for efficient analysis and optimization
The usefulness of flutter as a design metric is diluted for wings with destabilizing (softening) nonlinearities, as a stable high-amplitude limit cycle (subcritical) may exist for flight speeds well below the flutter point. It is thus desired to design aeroelastic structures such that the post-flutter behavior is as benign (i.e., supercritical) as possible, among the other constraints commonly ...
